|Message from President Carey
As my first commencement as president of Transylvania has now passed, I find myself reflecting on the 204 students we sent out into the world, themselves eager to explore new opportunities and new challenges. Although commencement is always a bittersweet time, when we have to say good-bye to many who have contributed so much to the vibrancy of campus life, it is also truly a beginning, full of hope and excitement and a sense of wonder at what might be possible. I feel confident that we have prepared our graduates to contribute to their new communities in meaningful, productive ways, and I can’t wait to hear stories about their future successes.
You may be aware that this class has already accomplished much. Forty-one percent are graduating with honors in their academic programs. Many received prestigious scholarships to continue their educations. Four received Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships that will take them to various Asian countries next year. Sixty-seven percent studied abroad, and three received Kenan Student-Faculty Research grants for independent projects in Europe. Click here to read more.
Happy Summer! I would like to officially welcome the Class of 2015 to the alumni family as this is the first monthly alumni newsletter they are receiving. It's looking like an exciting summer on campus already. The transformation of Haupt Plaza into the Alumni Plaza is well under way. You can keep up with the progress through photos on our Facebook page (Click the Plaza Photo Album). Clay and Davis residence halls will be torn down next week to make room for two new residence halls. Meanwhile, the third new residence hall, located just south of Forrer Hall in a former parking lot, is nearing completion and will be ready for students this fall (Click here for the Residence Hall Photo Album).
As you may have heard, Tracy Stephens Dunn '90, associate director of alumni relations, has taken on a new role at Transy as Director of Mentoring Programs. Tracy has been an integral part of the alumni relations team and while the alumni and development office won't be the same without her energy and hard work, I know that she will continue to make our alma mater proud in her new position. Please join me in wishing her all the best. Tracy can still be reached at email@example.com.
As you can see from the event schedule on the right, there are lots of opportunities for you to stay connected this summer. For those alumni having 5-year class reunions next year (classes ending with "1" and "6"), we will be kicking off the planning at the 2016 Reunion Kick-Off event on Saturday, August 22. Alumni Weekend is set for April 29-May 1, 2016. The more alumni reunion volunteers we have, the better your reunion will be. Please contact me if you'd like to serve on your 5-year reunion committee.
As June 30 nears, please remember our alma mater if you have yet to make a donation this year. For those alumni and friends in the Lexington area, you'll have the opportunity to come celebrate the end of the year with us. Stop by Haupt Circle on Tuesday, June 30. We want you to be our guest for a first-look, hard-hat tour of the new residence hall and free Fro-Jo's frozen yogurt! Lunch will be available for purchase from J. Render's BBQ food truck. For a full schedule of the day's events, click here.
Thank you for your continued support of Transylvania!
Yours in Transy Spirit,
Natasa Pajic Mongiardo ‘96
Director of Alumni Relations

On Saturday, May 23, the first group of majors from Transylvania's new neuroscience program graduated. These students are poised to further their educations in graduate or professional school or join the workforce after taking an interdisciplinary approach to a range of scientific and philosophical issues—from artificial intelligence to how the brain functions and how it makes us who we are. Rivas Prado '15 Raises the Barre
If you’ve never read “Don Quixote,” after talking with Guillermo Allen Rivas Prado, you will. This Cuban native knows the work better than most. After all, he’s read the novel and danced the ballet. His fervor for ballet, literature and life is inspiring. It’s the perfect gift for a future professor of Spanish literature.
Even in the Transylvania community, where people are driven to discover and excel, Rivas Prado sets a remarkable example of what one person can do. Prado, who graduated with a degree in Spanish language and literature, is also a husband and father (with a mortgage), a ballet dancer, full-time student, full-time worker, devourer of literature and, with the award of the University of Kentucky’s Lyman T. Johnson Fellowship, on his way to becoming the scholar, critic, writer and professor he has dreamed of being. Click title to read more.
