By the time the next Transy Connects issue publishes, our new VP Marty Smith—profiled below--will have arrived. We will take him on the road to meet alumni this fall and I know you will love him. He may not have attended Transy, yet he “gets us.” He believes in the power of a liberal arts education and the importance of how we prepare our graduates. More than anything, he knows the friendships and education we receive on this campus last a lifetime.
Like many of you, I was a Transy product long before Commencement. My parents met and fell in love here and my brother, husband and cousins hold Transy degrees. Transylvania is a family—both literally and figuratively—for us all. If our grounds could speak they would tell stories starting in 1780 of students who found their career passions here, met lifelong best friends, and learned what having exceptional faculty mentors can do for your life.
Are you one of these stories? If so, I ask you to look closely. Is our alma mater all that it could be? Does it warrant our support based on what it has done for us and what it will do for others with our help? Do we believe that, as a Transy professor told me long ago, our actions rather than our words state our true priorities? You can read below about two important opportunities to answer yes and have your donation matched by June 30—the end of our giving year.
For most of us, giving away what we work so hard to acquire is daunting. There are many wonderful causes and much we hope to do with our personal resources. Yet, prioritizing Transy demonstrates your pride in a way nothing else can. I have faith in our alumni that we will rise to the Challenge—that is who we are as Pioneers!

Interim VP for Advancement
Transylvania hires new VP for Advancement
Transylvania University has hired Martin W. Smith to serve as vice president for advancement. Smith comes to Transylvania from Illinois Wesleyan University, where as vice president for advancement he increased total giving by more than $10 million in the past five years. “I’m excited for this opportunity to help Transylvania prosper as one of the nation’s top liberal arts colleges,” Smith said. “I’ll work hard to ensure not only that current and future Pioneers continue to receive the resources needed for the best possible education, but also that alumni maintain strong bonds with the university that made them who they are today.” Click title to read more.
| Anthropology professor to investigate top archaeological find
Chris Begley '88, a Transylvania University anthropology professor, has been selected to serve on a team of maritime archaeologists who will explore the Fourni archipelago in Greece, where 22 shipwrecks were found in a small area last year. This was touted as one of the top archaeological finds of 2015. The findings of the joint Greek-American archaeological expedition bring to light ancient trade networks that once connected the entire Mediterranean. Fourni, which is a collection of 13 islands and islets, lies along a major east-west crossing route as well as the primary north-south route that connected the Aegean to the Levant. | Announcing Two Alumni Challenges
June 30 is almost here and we need alumni to sound the rally cry! Read about two important Challenges below; gifts can be made by cash, check, credit card or appreciated stock—allowing you to avoid capital gains. For more details on ways to give and the Challenges, click here. Thanks so much, in advance, for the difference you will make:
A $75,000 pledge will match dollar-for-dollar all new Annual Fund contributions made by June 30, including pledge payments. Offered by a Transylvania friend who was impressed with a group of Transy students, this Challenge will assist the most pressing campus needs through the Annual Fund. There has never been a better time to consider and maximize your impact on our alma mater. To be included in the Challenge, please act quickly by clicking here. Thank you, in advance, for your help!
The 100 for $10,000 Young Alumni Challenge is a test of our young alumni strength. To meet the goal, we must receive 100 gifts of any size by June 30 from classmates who graduated between 2006 and 2015. The alumni couple sponsoring this match wants to help us boost our alumni giving percentage. This statistic plays a key role in national rankings of Transy and makes our diplomas more valuable. It also encourages foundations and corporations to choose Transy for their own contributions. Alumni participation is based on the act of giving rather than the size of the gift, so all contributions count equally. To participate, click here. Let’s show the country how exceptional our young alumni are!
