alumni on-line community

Spring is a beautiful time on Transy's campus. We hope to see you this spring, during Alumni Weekend - April 24-26!

TransE-Mail - April 2015
Message from President Carey

Dear Alumni,

As we close in on the end of winter term, there is a palpable sense of focus on campus as students prepare for their final exams and write their final papers. Since arriving at Transylvania, it has been clear to me that our greatest strength is exactly where it needs to be - the interaction between faculty and students. Our students continue to thrive under the tutelage of our faculty. This is evident in the number and the prestige of the awards our senior class has earned, from Fulbright fellowships to Alpha Lambda Delta scholarships for graduate study. (Stay tuned for the announcements and presentations of these awards.)

As many of you know, we are in the process of revitalizing the campus. Three new residence halls are at the heart of this revitalization, and I am delighted to share the news that one of the new residence halls will be named “Bassett Hall” in honor of trustee, Mr. James E. Bassett III. Mr. Bassett has served Transylvania University as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1970. He has received honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University and Transylvania University. A graduate of Yale University, Mr. Bassett has been a pillar of citizenship throughout his life, having been recognized with numerous awards including: Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award, Department of Navy Superior Public Service Award, Eclipse Award of Merit, Lord Derby Award, Distinguished Philanthropist Award and the Transylvania Medal. Natasa's Notes

Fellow Transylvanians,

Spring is finally in the Bluegrass and Alumni Weekend is a couple of weeks away! I hope you’ll join us April 24-26! You’ll want to attend some Transy classes on Friday, April 24 before you head out to Keeneland (those tickets are sold out, yet there will be plenty of room at the Young Alumni Tailgate). On Saturday, April 25, don’t miss the Alumni Celebration Convocation where you’ll hear from President Carey and celebrate several alumni award recipients (click here to see list of honorees). Transy Family Lunch in the Forrer Hall Dining Center (a.k.a. the Cafeteria or the Caf) is something new and fun for all! So much more is in store for everyone that weekend. I hope to see you in a couple of weeks!

Yours in Transy Spirit,

Reunion Giving
Alumni Weekend is almost here!  Have you made your Reunion gift? If not, there’s still time. We ask members of reunion classes to make a “stretch” gift, a gift that is larger than they normally consider, in honor of their Reunion.  The Class Gift consists of the total of all gifts and pledges (including multi-year pledges payable over the next three years) received between now and Alumni Weekend. Gifts of non-cash assets such as appreciated securities, deferred gifts, life insurance, and various life income plans, will also count in the Reunion Gift totals.

If you have recently made your class gift or pledge, please know that we sincerely appreciate your support.  If not, please consider supporting the Class Gift effort—at any level—before Alumni Weekend.  Sending in your gift prior to April 22 will result in its inclusion in our reunion gift presentation—to be announced during the Alumni Celebration Convocation.
For more information about giving, please contact John Davis, director of development, at or (859) 281-3565. Make a gift online.

The Inside Scoop

The Student Perspective
The Student Perspective
Hey everyone! My name is Katie-Beth and I am a junior here at Transy! I'm back again to fill you all in on what's going on on campus from a students perspective.

Winter semester is coming to a close and students are developing a serious case of spring fever, which I attribute to Keeneland opening and May Term being only two short weeks away. Finals are nearly upon us, so many students are taking to back circle to study and soak up as much sun as possible on the days it isn't raining. The warmer weather has also drawn students out to the sporting events around, particularly the track meets on our brand new field! The tennis, baseball, softball, and lacrosse teams are seeing added support from students thanks to the nicer weather and hype from the Crimson Crazies (which is an organization kind of like a pep club here on campus).
