From the President

My first semester at Transylvania has proven to be an exciting one. I’ve been impressed with the talent of our students, inspired by the scholarship of our faculty, and humbled by the welcome each of you has shown me. Many of you have shared with me that you, too, feel this sense of excitement on our campus. As our semester is beginning to wind down, I’d like to share a few of the highlights from this fall.

Perhaps the most exciting news from the fall semester involves upcoming changes to one of the campus’ most iconic buildings. A generous alumnus has accepted our challenge to be the lead donor for a significant renovation of the interior of Haupt Humanities. Click here to read full letter.

Natasa's Notes

Fellow Pioneers:

As we prepare to usher in 2015, I am thankful for the great fall semester we’ve had at Transylvania and look forward to what’s to come. I hope that after reading President Carey's message, you are as excited about the progress happening at our alma mater as I am.

We are working on several alumni events for winter and spring 2015 as well as finalizing details for Alumni Weekend - April 24-26. The Transylvania Alumni Board is seeking nominations for new TAB members. Please submit names to me by January 12 in time for the TAB Nominating Committee Meeting later that month.

I wish you all the best this holiday season and in the New Year. Hail, Transylvania!

Transylvania receives $2 million gift
Transylvania receives $2 million gift
One of the most prominent buildings on the campus of Transylvania University is set to receive a major facelift thanks, in part, to the generous donation of a 1964 alumnus. Alvin R. “Pete” and Marilyn Carpenter plan to donate $2 million as the lead gift for the renovation of the Haupt Humanities building.

“My education at Transylvania left me with a desire for lifelong learning,” said Pete Carpenter, who retired in 2001 as vice chairman of CSX Corporation. “This desire for learning and curiosity has helped me in my business endeavors. Institutions like Transylvania are the basis to the success some of us have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed. It’s crucial to give back to these institutions in order to help prepare and educate our next generation of leaders.” Click title to read more.
Green Revolving Loan Fund Report
The Green Revolving Loan Fund (GRLF) provides funding for projects that reduce Transylvania’s purchased utility usage or landfill-bound waste production. The resulting monetary savings are used to repay the fund, which can then be reinvested in additional projects. The fund was launched with a $75,000 seed grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, awarded in 2013. The university matched the grant with an additional $75,000 from its capital projects budget, creating a $150,000 fund for the first round of projects. The university will grow the fund through savings generated by GRLF projects and donations. Click here to read full report.
Alumni Plaza Brick Project
Transylvania University alumni have united to renovate a gathering place in the heart of the campus—and provide funding for legacy scholarships while they’re at it. To raise money for the Alumni Plaza project, graduates of the university are asking donors to have their name—or the name of someone they’d like to honor—engraved on a brick that will be placed in the busy meeting area behind historic Old Morrison. The deadline to purchase a brick to be included in the Foundation Club section is December 31. Click title to order your brick and  to read more.

Faculty Spotlight

Dave Shannon
Dave Shannon

He has an abiding love for mathematics, lives it, and loves to talk about it.

Anyone who has spent time with mathematics professor David Shannon knows full well the truth of those words. He is captivated by the intricacy and logic of complex mathematical formulations, and he likes nothing better than to see the light of understanding come on in the minds of his students.

"A good mathematics course requires that both the student and the teacher work very hard," he says. "I love to interact with bright, curious students who give good effort. Sharing with them my love of mathematics and of its beauty is what I enjoy most about teaching."

Transylvania students and his faculty colleagues have long recognized the quality of Shannon's teaching. It was made official in 2011 when he received the Transylvania Medal for the distinction he has brought to the university through his exemplary service, both in and out of the classroom. In 2009, he was co-recipient of the Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics, given by the Kentucky section of the Mathematical Association of America.
