Message from President Carey

Dear Alumni,

As we move into the holiday season, I want to express my gratitude to each of you for your commitment and support for your alma mater. We would not be able to offer the quality of education for which we are known without you. I hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family.

I am also grateful for the work of our faculty, staff and students in moving forward several important initiatives on campus. No initiative is more important than Project One, which we launched seven short months ago. Through Project One, we intend to demonstrate forcefully the right of every Transylvanian to a safe, intellectually challenging place where creativity, compassion, integrity, mercy, and moral courage matter. Our touchstone is that liberal arts education—messy and uncertain as it may be—is the best path to the wisdom needed to address the problems we face.

I invite each of you to visit our Project One website to read the subcommittee reports. Our campus community will be meeting in early December to continue the discussion and move into action. While we have accomplished a great deal over the past seven months, we recognize that there is still work to be done. Some will claim that we are being forced to move in directions we might not otherwise go. But I do not see this as a choice that is forced upon us. We embrace it because it is the right thing to do. We accept it because we are the right community to do it. And we will succeed because we are Transylvania.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. Your support and encouragement are critical to the success of Transylvania University.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Seamus Carey

Bryan Station High School group finds path to college well-lit by Transylvania University
For juniors and seniors who anticipate pursuing college scholarships, a series of mock interviews with staff and students at Transylvania University was a welcome chance to present their strengths and rehearse their pitches. “I fidget a lot and am really nervous and talk with my hands, so to come here and get the practice, I really love that,” said Taelaesha Hale, one of nearly a dozen students from Lexington’s Bryan Station High School visiting the Transy campus, also in Lexington. Staff Spotlight

Thankful to Elaine Valentine for 21 Years of Service

Elaine Valentine joined the alumni and development office staff in July of 1994. At the end of next month, Elaine will officially retire from her post as the administrative assistant (a.k.a. "she who makes the office run", "the boss", "the queen of data", "the kindest, most patient"). So many other attributes come to mind to those who have worked with Elaine over the course of her long tenure at Transylvania. When asked about her impending retirement, Elaine had this to say: "It's truly been a pleasure working at Transylvania University and becoming a contributing part of the campus. I'll miss the people with whom I've worked, but most importantly I'll miss the alumni I've had the opportunity to get to know over the years. Whether it's been from talking to you on the telephone, meeting you at various alumni events, updating your alumni records, or compiling class notes for the magazine, I feel like I've come to know each and every one of you."

Transylvania alumni will miss seeing Elaine. We are grateful for everything she has done for this University. Her colleagues in the alumni and development office will miss her immensely and wish her nothing but the best in the next chapter of her life.
