TransE-Mail - March 2015
Message from President Carey

Dear Alumni and Friends,

When I accepted the position of president at Transylvania, no one mentioned to me that Lexington’s winter weather would be more severe than New York’s. I pointed this out to Mr. Young recently, though I did not get the impression we would be renegotiating my contract anytime soon. On a more serious note, I want to thank all the facilities workers who put in long hours in difficult conditions to keep the campus moving. I am grateful for all they do.

Despite the snow and cold, our spring semester has already proven to be filled with exciting news. As you may have heard, we recently selected Dr. Laura Bryan, current dean of the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Baltimore, as our new dean and vice president of academic affairs. I want to thank Paul Jones and Jeff Mudrak for spearheading the search committee, as well as each of the committee members for their work in reviewing the more than 100 applications and recommending the three finalists. I look forward to welcoming Dr. Bryan to campus. Click here to read full message.

Natasa's Notes

Fellow Transylvanians,

Though the weather forecast may not show it, I know that spring is in the air because Alumni Weekend is less than eight weeks away!  April 24-26 will be an exciting weekend of reminiscing about some old Transylvania traditions and celebrating our alma mater’s new beginnings. Just a few highlights: Alumni Day at Keeneland; TGIF Party at Atomic Café; Alumni Celebration Convocation where you’ll hear from President Carey and celebrate several alumni award recipients including Doug ’69 and Gayle ‘69 Hutcherson—Morrison Medallion and Colene Elridge ’05—Outstanding Young Alumni Award; Transy Family Lunch in the Forrer Hall Dining Center (a.k.a. the Cafeteria or the Caf); a special reception honoring Dr. Charles Haggard; President’s Reception in Celebration of Reunions; as well as many fun 5-year reunion celebrations. For full schedule, hotel information and online registration, click here.

I truly enjoyed receiving and sharing the Pioneer Pairs stories last month. I know there are lots more stories of Transy alumni couples out there. Please keep sending them! Check our Facebook page for future #PioneerPairs posts.

Yours in Transy Spirit,

Faculty Spotlight

Bill Baldwin
Bill Baldwin
As Bill Baldwin explains, “Every company needs someone with a business background.” It’s a field of study any graduate could put to good use, whether by choosing a somewhat obvious career, such as marketing, advertising, finance, or management, or finding a niche at a non-profit or government organization.

Baldwin particularly enjoys the small classes and the interaction with students that Transylvania affords. Professors not only work with students in the classroom, but they see them at the campus café, in committee meetings, while pursuing joint scholarly research, and during impromptu visits to a professor’s office.
