Natasa's Notes

Dear fellow Transylvanians,

Can it be February already? As you know, by reading our monthly e-newsletter and/or following us on social media, we love to highlight alumni stories. This month, I’m especially excited to celebrate over 2,000 alumni who are married to fellow Pioneers. If you are one of those #PioneerPairs, please email your story to me with a photo or use the hashtag #PioneerPairs when posting on Facebook or Twitter. We will highlight as many couples as possible on our Facebook page and Twitter this month.

Final details regarding various Alumni Weekend activities are being confirmed and online registration will be available later this month. I hope you will join us for this wonderful weekend of “Old Traditions. New Beginnings.” on April 24-26, 2015. Just a few highlights: Alumni Day at Keeneland; TGIF Party at Atomic Café; Alumni Celebration Convocation, where you’ll hear from President Seamus Carey and celebrate several alumni award recipients; Transy Family Lunch in the Forrer Hall Dining Center (a.k.a the Cafeteria or the Caf); a special reception honoring Dr. Charles Haggard; President’s Reception in Celebration of Reunions; as well as many fun 5-year reunion celebrations. Transylvania adopts test-optional admissions policy
Beginning with the fall 2016 admissions cycle, students will no longer be required to submit ACT or SAT scores when applying to Transylvania University. Transylvania becomes the first Kentucky school from the U.S. News and World Report’s top 100 liberal arts colleges to adopt the new system, which is becoming increasingly popular among leading institutions. Students will still have the option to submit their scores for consideration in the admission and scholarship processes but can choose not to, if they feel the scores do not accurately reflect their academic abilities. Alumni in the News

Kristin Grenier '11
Kristin Grenier '11
Life since graduation has been busy for Kristin Grenier '11.  She has hiked the Appalachian Trail and the 4000'ers in New England, served in AmeriCorps and on tree planting crews, worked in a college, and in retail. She has even moved often--once having five addresses in an eight-month period and other times not having an address at all. Now, Kristin plans to hike the Pacific Crest Trail as a benefit hike for the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society. Click title to read full story on
Alumni helping make treatment more affordable
SelfRefind has a long-term goal of making the treatment of addiction affordable and accessible to all and is close to seeing that goal realized. Laura Edgington '06
Laura Edgington '06
As a child, Laura Edgington ’06 bred Nubian dairy goats. She lived on a small farm in northern Kentucky and traveled to goat shows around the country. “Success in these competitions depended heavily on the structural correctness of the animals. We implemented a strict breeding program to enhance certain traits within our herd and eliminate the less desirable ones. When I took my first biology class in high school, I discovered that the effectiveness of our breeding program could be explained at a molecular level.”

And with that, Edgington’s career in science was off and running. In 2012, after five years at Stanford University, she successfully defended her doctoral dissertation, which focused on fluorescent molecules she synthesized to assess the efficacy of chemotherapy in mice with cancer. After a three-month trip around Asia and Africa, she will begin postdoctoral work at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Click title to read more.

Faculty Spotlight

Angela Hurley
Angela Hurley
One of Angela Hurley's fondest memories is when a Transylvania elementary education graduate called to say that she was on her way to pick up her cap and gown for graduation from Harvard University. It's not that unusual an occurrence. "One reason we can do such a good job of preparing our students is that we know each of them very well," says Hurley. "We tailor our program to meet their needs. Our students and faculty become a little community."

In the classroom, Hurley helps students learn how to reason well about important ideas and urgent questions, while also engaging their hearts and spirits. Click title to read more.
